Copyright (c) 1991,1992 Rick Vandenberg

V-MailServer is a powerful MSDOS based mail server. It provides
all the usual file server features, plus public and private mailing
lists, automatic file requests, and additional commands. It is designed
to work with any RFC822-compliant mail system that runs under MSDOS.

Features:
---------

File Server commands ( /GET, SEND, etc )
Mailing List Server commands ( SUBSCRIBE, SIGNOFF, REVIEW )
Automatic file sending features
Password capability
Fully configurable
Definable daily and per message limits
Full request logging

File Server Commands
--------------------

V-MailServer supports a variety of file request commands, including the
common /GET, /PDGET, GET, and SEND. This is to allow users accustomed
to different mail and list servers to use V-MailServer with a minimal
learning curve.

Mailing List server functions
-----------------------------

V-MailServer implements two types of mailing list facilities - public
mailing lists and private mailing lists.

Public mailing lists are accessed much like the well known BITNET
LISTSERV mailing lists. People use the SUBSCRIBE and UNSUBSCRIBE
commands to add or remove themselves from the applicable mailing
lists. All messages are sent to the list address, and are then
forwarded to all members of that mailing list.

Private mailing lists are set up at the discretion of the system
administrator. Files and mailing lists may be manipulated in user
directories assigned to specific users. This type of functionality is
useful for providing information or files to a private group of
people.

A brief summary of these commands:

PUT - send a file to a user directory
CREATELIST - create a mailing list file
RESENDLIST - resend a file using a mailing list
FILES - retrieve the list of files in a user directory
KILL - erase a file in a user directory

Automatic File Server features
------------------------------

A file may be sent automatically in response to a message addressed
to a specific address. For example, this file might be requested by
sending a message to 'vmail-info-request@vsystem.wimsey.bc.ca'.
V-MailServer can be configured for any number of AFS addresses.

Passwords
---------

Passwords may be assigned, changed or deleted on a per-user basis. If
the user has been assigned a password, no command may be processed
unless the correct password is given in the body of the request.

Request Logging
---------------

All commands are logged in a user specified log file, along with the
address of the requester and the date and time of the request.

Request Limits
--------------

V-MailServer currently implements traffic limits on a per message and
per day basis. These limits are imposed per From: address.

Availability
------------

V-MailServer 1.22 is available now (finally!).

Support
-------

Support will be handled through the V-MailServer mailing list described
below. Anyone interested in any facet of mail server use is invited to
subscribe to this list.

Application notes
-----------------

A series of application notes will be created as the need arises, and
will be made available via the mail-server@vsystem.wimsey.bc.ca. Use the
following command to retrieve current index:

GET appnotes/INDEX
