MOZART Information
------------------

VERSIONS OF MOZART INCLUDED

Within the installation package there are two versions of
MOZART: version 1, the original program for Windows 3.1
and a newer 32-bit version for Windows 95 and Windows NT.

If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT, then the newer
version will install automatically. There is no reason to
install version 1: it will run but it will do nothing which
the newer 32-bit version cannot.

If you are running Windows 3.1 or 3.11, then version 1 will
install automatically. You can run the installation again
if you upgrade to Windows 95 to take advantage of the extra
features of newer version.

UPWARD COMPATIBILITY

Music files created by MOZART are upwardly compatible. That
is to say that later versions of MOZART will read the files
created by earlier versions but not vice versa.

MOZART Installation Instructions
--------------------------------

1. DISTRIBUTION FILES

There are different forms in which you may have got a
copy of MOZART:

A) You got the evaluation version in the form a zip file,
with a name like MOZART30.ZIP, from a bulletin board, via
the internet, from CompuServe, or on a CD-ROM.

(The zip file names may vary: the two digits in the name -
if present - reflect the version. )

B) You have a disk or disks containing one or more files,
including the installation program SETUP.EXE and this file
READ1ST.TXT

C) You may have downloaded a mozart installation program
as MZSETUP.EXE program from the internet directly, and have
found this file, READ1ST.TXT, with it.

2. UNZIPPING

If you found MOZART in form (A), and have not yet unzipped the
file, then you have to do this first. Unzip the ZIP file into a
temporary directory. This is done using the utility PKUNZIP or
WINZIP (or equivalent) which you should find on internet,
CompuServe, or wherever you found the MOZART ZIP file. (Note:
"ZIP" is a standard compressed file format for distributing PC
shareware and all good internert shareware sites should carry an
unzipper.)

3. INSTALLATION FILES

Having unzipped the file, or having found MOZART in form (B) or
(C) above, you will see a file setup.exe or mzSetup.exe which
installs MOZART. The file READ1ST.TXT contains useful
information for installing. (It is one of the files containing
this information and you may be reading it now!)

IMPORTANT NOTE: If these installation files are put on your hard
disk, they must be put in a (temporary) directory which must NOT
be the directory you are about to install MOZART into.

4. INSTALLING MOZART

Installation is done by running the program SETUP.EXE or
MZSETUP.EXE supplied in the set of MOZART installation files.

You should not run other programs while the running the
MOZART installation procedure. (This includes programs
like the Microsoft Office quick access bar which many people
run from start-up and forget about!)

The installation asks a few questions including: where do
you want MOZART installed? It suggests a directory. You
may install it anywhere on your hard disk but it is best
to be in a new directory. The setup program creates the
directory for you if it doesn't exist.

If it prompts for disk2: if you are installing from floppy
disks insert the second disk; if you are installing from a
temporary directory on the hard disk, give the path to the
directory containing the file setup.w02.

MOZART setup installs a number of utility DLL files which
are commonly used by many programs. Depending on your
system configuration, it puts these in your Common Program
Files, Windows, or Windows System directory. If you already
have a newer version of any of these files than the one
supplied with MOZART, the installation will pause to ask you
if you really want to install an older version. The correct
answer is usually "No". (If you do want to install older
versions, then exit from the setup program and back up your
originals first - MOZART should work with newer versions;
other applications may not work with older ones.)

The common DLLs installed by MOZART setup are listed under
the heading "Files installed" in the file README.TXT.

MOZART SETUP also installs a number of sample tunes in a
separate directory. These files have the extension .mz
and the installation registers these as belonging to MOZART
so that you can open them by clicking on them in the Windows
95/NT4 Explorer or the Windows 3.1 Program Manager.

A number of icons will appear in a collection on the Windows
95/NT Start Menu or a Program Manager Group entitled "Mozart"
or "Mozart32". These include MOZART itself, an icon for direct
access to the on-line help, and companion information file
README.TXT.

In the Evaluation Copy icons are installed to give you direct
access to the order forms, which are in Windows WRITE format
and readable also by WORDPAD and WORD.

MOZART: FURTHER INFORMATION
---------------------------

README.TXT: Other important information including how to
register and uninstall MOZART is given in the file README.TXT
which is installed with your MOZART files. This can be read
after installation if you wish. README.TXT also has useful
trouble-shooting information in case MOZART does not run
satisfactorily first time after installation.
